This summer, Westfield Gas + Electric invites you to dig into something sweet with our Shovels for Scoops program!

We’re hiding miniature shovels throughout the community, each tagged with an important Call 811 reminder. If you find one, bring it to Northside Creamery (519 Southampton Rd.), Mr. Whipy’s at Golf Acres (517 Union St.), or Mrs. C’s Soft Serve (192 E. Main St.) and enjoy a free small ice cream—our treat!

“Many homeowners don’t realize that even small projects like installing a fence or planting a bush can put them at risk of hitting underground utility lines,” said Denise Machado, WG+E Manager of Regulatory Compliance. “Calling 811 is a simple, free step that helps protect your family, your property, and your neighborhood.”

When you call 811 before digging, utility companies are notified and will mark the locations of underground lines with paint or flags. After waiting 72 hours, you’re clear to dig safely.

“We want people to think twice before picking up a shovel,” Machado added. “Accidentally striking a buried gas or electric line can lead to serious injuries, outages, expensive repairs, or state-issued fines. Through this campaign, we’re helping raise awareness—and making it fun at the same time.”

Shovels for Scoops runs all summer long, and shovels can be redeemed through September 30. Follow WG+E on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for clues about where the shovels will be—then go find one and dig safely!
