It’s Cold Out There—But Your WG+E Rates Aren’t Going Up
If your heating system has been running non-stop lately, you’re not alone. Record-breaking cold hit our region in early December, and this past weekend’s winter storm brought frigid temperatures that are sticking around all week.
Here’s the good news: While wholesale energy prices are going through the roof (natural gas prices jumped nearly 70% in just three days!), WG+E customers won’t see a rate increase. Our rates have stayed stable for three years running.
Even better? Westfield residents are saving big compared to neighboring areas:
- Gas rates: About 23% lower than other Investor Owned Utilities
- Electric rates: Nearly half the cost—just $0.17 per kWh vs. other IOU’s at $0.33
Natural gas prices are trading five times higher than they were Monday, January 19th, at $124/Dth for January 27th, versus $18/Dth last week. Day-ahead peak power prices are trading at $750/MWh for the rest of this week compared to a more typical $100/MWh range.
“Even with WG+E’s stable rates, we know that the cold weather and increased usage will impact our customer’s bills,” states Tom Flaherty, General Manager of Westfield Gas + Electric/Whip City Fiber. “We encourage customers to be conscientious about their energy use and to reach out to us if they need assistance.”
